Yes, I'm still alive

Hi All,

I'm not getting the time to use the internet apart from to book flights and stuff so the blog has fallen by the wayside. I think I'll write some blog entries on paper and type them up as I get the chance.

So, I'm alive and well and in Pondicherry on the east coast of India. I leave for Singapore in 10 days. Beyond that is going to have to wait till I get some time. I'm trying to book a ticket to Kerala just now but the Indian Airlines site is not working. Looks like I'll miss the flight. Time to change my plans.

Hope you are all well. Send me a text if you like. I do get a chance to answer them. =)

Booked It!

Phew!

Well, I went into STA today and booked my tickets =)

I think the excitement is slowly building rather than being a big rush. I think it's probably the fact that I have a helluva lot of planning left to do that's keeping a lid on things. Still, I'm very glad that it's booked now.

One important bit was getting the extra flights from KL to Sydney for Christmas and New Year. Due to the fact that I was needed at work until the end of September I was gonna miss the celebrations in Oz. However, with this extra trip I'll get to do it and still not have to rush Malaysia. The only problem remaining is getting the accommodation sorted out. It's still three months away but I'm getting the feeling that everywhere is already booked up =(

A sad thing about the way things are going is that I won't have time to visit either my friend Michael in Cambridge or my friends Jonathan and Deborah in Swindon before I go. I am really disappointed about this as they are all great friends and I haven't taken the opportunity to see them now that they have moved away. Yeah, things haven't been easy here but now that I realise that I won't get a chance for another year it is a bit of a bummer. Still, it's not all bad, they deserve postcards =)

So, the next big things to get done are the visas for Oz and India, vaccinations and credit card. Oh, and plan, plan, plan.

Wish me luck!

India North and West

Phew,

Tonight has been some broad brush planning of India. Thanks to my Dad for guiding me through it. I've put together a week long tour North of Delhi that includes Amritsar, Dharamsala and Shimla. The hope is to do this when I come back from Goa. If all works out I'll be back in Delhi in lots of time for Diwali. Should be fun =)

I've also planned a two week tour West into Rajesthan. I'll pick up The Taj Mahal on the way (not literally). Going out as far as Jaisalmer and Udaipur. I plan to leave from there to Mumbai to then connect with the South section of my Indian experience. Still to plan this bit so hopefully it'll go alright too.

Time to hit the guidebooks again.

Things are Nuts!

Hey,

So, it's a new blog and already I'm taking ages between posts. Yup, I'm bad. But I've been busy and bad. Planning isn't going as I, um, planned but other areas are working out. Here's the update:

My planning was given a kickstart last Tuesday when I made some new friends. Anne is the sister of one of my sister's friends. (read that again, it makes sense). Her and her boyfriend Dean are a well travelled couple who, on hearing about my plans, invited me for dinner. Very unexpected and extremely kind of them. They are both great. Very friendly, easy going and absolutely full of enthusiasm and great advice on travelling. Conversation focused mainly on India as that seemed the most daunting place and was also the first on the list. Both Anne and Dean have travelled to India twice so they are pretty expert. Talking with them certainly gave me more confidence to take on India and made me realise what is possible even given the huge size of the country. We talked about some of my other destinations too which was good. Above all else, it was a really fun evening!

I've been having a great time buying stuff (I need). I love gadgets and outdoors equipment and stuff so it's been great fun shopping for all this. It's kinda bloke shopping so it's allowed. I've been a regular at Tiso on Baird Street where I got such goodies as a cable lock for my rucksack, a pegless washing line and a daybag that packs into a mesh bag for putting into my main bag. I've been checking out mosquito nets in Adventure 1, near Queen Street Station. They have a heck of a range of mosquito nets for good prices. A few have sat for a while so the insecticide treatment will have worn off but that can be reapplied. I'm just trying to decide on a balance between keeping the mozzies out and allowing the breeze in. I've also go my sterile needle kit, ball of string and bulldog clips. If I can track down a pair of convertible trousers I'll probably have the majority of my kit.

Plans seem to be coming together for my girlfriend, Nidhi, and I meeting up in India. She's heading out to a wedding in Delhi at the end of September and we plan to meet up at the beginning of October and fly down to Goa for a while. I'm hoping that we'll be able to find some interesting things to do there as well as enjoy the great beaches and wonderful sunsets. Now that India is making more sense I've been able to ask Nidhi some more sensible questions about the country. She's been lots of help with loads of random questions I have. Hopefully she'll teach me some useful phrases in Hindi too =)

Still lots to do though!

First post!

Hey All,

I've just set up this Blog as a useful place to record my round the world journal. You can start laying bets now as to how often I'll update it. Hopefully I'll do it when I can but that's sure to slide to 'when I can be bothered' in no time. Still, I've got to try.

Seem'd easy enough to set up so let's see if it works. The only sticking point was what to call it. I did consider 'Dave Goes Round The Bend' but that day has long since past. 'Lanky Scots Guy and a Backpack' was another option. Hmm, maybe I should've gone for that.

For those who don't know, the plan is to travel round the world from Glasgow, Scotland. The order of countries is as follows: India, Singapore, Malaysia, Borneo, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Hawaii, U.S.A and home. Sure, two of the above are islands and not actual countries, but you get the idea. Whole trip should be about 9-12 months. Leaving date should be the start of October 2006. Eeek.

Today I got my injections. My arms just feel a bit bruised just now so I think I'm okay. No adverse reactions. Left arm is the combined Tetanus, Diphtheria and something, the right arm is Typhoid. I'm sure there is some titanic battle of good versus evil going on in my body right now but no ill effects. I wonder how that all works.

Need to get Japanese Encephalitis and Meningitis vaccinations too. They're not essential and have to be private prescriptions so that'll probably be around £200 worth. Still, it's my health I'm thinking about and I'm sure it'll end up just being peanuts compared to the final cost of this trip. I also need to get Malaria tablets. The choice is Doxycycline or Malarone. I think the former is more expensive but has fewer possible side effects. I'll have to take them for 3 months so I need to make sure I get the right one for me. Again, it's a private prescription so I'd rather not shell out a few hundred quid on something that will make me ill.

Be good now
